WILO SE: 138 years “Pumpen Intelligenz”
![]() From the factory for copper and brass goods to the global player in the pump industry WILO SE headquartered in Dortmund, Germany, has become one of the leading pump manufacturers with numerous ground-breaking innovations not only regarding heating circulation pumps. Moreover, the company proves broad expertise in the development and production of energy-efficient and long-living pumps and systems for industrial and municipal applications. And when it comes to service, Wilo is also a strong partner for pump operators, system constructors and craftsmen. Founded as a factory for copper and brass goods by Louis Opländer in 1872, the Dortmund-based pump expert WILO SE over the years has developed into a globally leading company in the pump industry. In 1928, the success story in pump technology began with filing the patent for the first "circulation accelerator". Compared to conventional gravitational heating systems, the forerunner of the heating pump did not only allow for a more direct heat supply of the radiators, but also for reducing the heating water temperature. It was gradually replaced by simple, uncontrolled circulation pumps. However, these uncontrolled standard pumps consumed a lot of power. In 1988, Wilo succeeded in developing the first fully electronic circulation pump "Wilo-Star-E" which was a decisive step to more user comfort and energy efficiency. The output of the pump could be adjusted to the actual demand which almost halved power consumption. Doubling the efficiency compared to such electronically controlled pumps with conventional drives was made possible with high-efficiency pumps with electronically commutated motors (ECM). In 2001, Wilo presented the first high-efficiency pump for heating, air-conditioning and cooling applications with the launch of the "Wilo-Stratos" pumps. The pump was the reference for the energy efficiency class A when, in 2005, the European energy label for heating pumps was introduced. The newest generation of high efficient Wilo pumps, the "Wilo-Stratos PICO", allows for energy savings of up to 90 % compared to uncontrolled circulation pumps. In 2009, the company took a step into a new era in heating technology with the Decentralised Pump System which is initially available only in Germany. "Wilo-Geniax" relies on several miniature pumps at the heating surfaces or the heating circuits instead of thermostatic valves, as well as a central control unit with state-of-the-art computer technology. In particular, the main advantage is – besides improvements of the hydraulic system and the comfort – a considerable reduction of the heating energy demand of about 20 % in average. Today the brand name Wilo stands for highest quality and innovation strength and this also for systems in other fields of application. For water supply applications, for example, the pump expert developed the high-efficiency high-pressure multistage centrifugal pumps "Wilo-Helix". When installed individually or switched in parallel as pressure boosting systems they provide the required system pressure in secondary hot water and industrial water networks. With lifting units like the "Wilo-DrainLift M2/8" Wilo offers reliable and backflow-safe systems for discharging sewage into the public sewer system. In 2003, the acquisition of the traditional brand EMU allowed Wilo to achieve comprehensive synergy effects in pump development, sales and services in public water supply, sewage disposal and wastewater treatment plant technology. WILO SE produces particularly powerful and energy-efficient pumps and mixers at the location in Hof, Germany. In the factory in Minden, also located in Germany, Wilo EMUPORT GmbH constructs and produces pumps stations with an innovative solids separation system for pressure drainage. Today under the umbrella brand WILO SE the pump manufacturer has representative offices in more than 70 countries and employs about 6,000 people throughout the world. In 2008, the turnover amounted to 977 m. Euros.
